As a husband and father of four, I’ve really come to appreciate the powerful message of Love at Home. Consider one of my favorite lines: Sweeter sings the brooklet by / Brighter beams the azure sky / Oh, there’s One who smiles on high When there’s love at home. Truly, when we feel peace in our hearts and love in our family relationships (the most important relationships we have on earth), the world seems a better place. The hymn text uses lots of garden imagery and in the accompaniment I reference flowing water, blooming roses and bright, sparkling moments that suggest peace, tranquility and joy. The choral parts are simply and straight forward, with a little complexity at the climactic “Love at Home” near the end of the last verse.

This beautiful Polish carol has long resonated with me. Something about the steady climb of the melody and chord progression in the second part of the verse reminds me of eternal progression and speaks to my soul of hope and faith. Here again, the choral parts are very simple and lend themselves well to a smaller choir. This piece can be performed with piano only, though the additional instruments really bring out the sweetness of the harmony.

Far, Far Away reflects the glory of Christmas and the joyful hope that attends the phrase “peace on earth, good will toward men.” Two pianists are required, and may find the music a bit of a challenge, but the straightforward, four-part chorus allows the choir to powerfully express the grandeur of the Savior’s birth.

When performed with the optional flute, violin and cello, this piece has a resounding effect while still being appropriate for a Sunday Christmas program.
