This beautiful Polish carol has long resonated with me. Something about the steady climb of the melody and chord progression in the second part of the verse reminds me of eternal progression and speaks to my soul of hope and faith. Here again, the choral parts are very simple and lend themselves well to a smaller choir. This piece can be performed with piano only, though the additional instruments really bring out the sweetness of the harmony.

  1. Hello Steve,
I am originally from Poland and I wanted to let you know that I am planing to use this arrangement of Polish Carol with my Ward Choir. This is one of favorite Polish carols. I did sing this last year (in Polish) with the Ward choir, this year would be a little difficult since I am the choir director :-)
My children will play cello and violin and I will have some other young girl play the flute. I will let you know how this all sound it.
Thank you again for posting this carol. Have a wonderful day,

    Sincerely
    Kasia Haroldsen

    • Thanks so much for the kind comments, Kasia. This really is a beautiful melody and I’m honored that, as a native, you like the arrangement. Good luck!

My ward choir is doing this for our Christmas program this year. My pianist and I were wondering if there is a piano/choir only file available (like the one for Far, Far Away on Judeo’s Plains) to make it easier to put on the piano.

    Thanks.

Thanks, Steve. That is a great help!

The California San Diego Mission puts on a fireside for investigators every month. We would like to have the missionaries sing a Christmas song and include brass accompaniment. We usually have 60-80 missionaries singing and can only have one
Saturday practice before the performance on Sunday evening. We have at least 4 missionaries who play brass instruments (trumpet and trombone) very well. I was told by Brenda from Lehi that you might be able to help us out. Thank you.

    • @Sis. Redford: You bet. This sounds fun. Do you have an organ available, too? Organ and a brass quartet sound great with Christmas music. Also, did you particularly want Stars Were Gleaming or some other Christmas piece? I think Far, Far Away on Judea’s Plains would sound terrific with these instruments. I can rewrite the choral parts to make them easier to master in one rehearsal (unless you think they can do it as-is). What are your thoughts?

    Steve,
I think “Far Far Away” would be great, too. We do have access to an organ and a couple of missionaries who can play it. We would appreciate any help you could give us. I know the sister missionaries can sing and master the two parts quickly. If the Tenor and Bass parts when they split are rare, the elders would be able to master it. Our choir numbers to date have been wonderful! We have a lot of talented missionaries. So far, we have 3 trombonists and a trumpeteer. We are trying to find out if they can play any other brass instruments. Thanks again for your help.

Thank you so much for themusical piece

Our Ward Choir performed this number with instrumentalists exactly as written. It was very effective. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful arrangement.

    Steve,

Any way you could put a MP3 file of this on the web site?

Hi! I’m looking for a Christmas hymn arranged for oboe, flute, bassoon and choir. Will this one work? I know that bassoon can play the cello part but I’m not sure about the oboe playing the violin part. Obviously we can’t play the chords like the string instruments, but any other suggestions would be great! Thanks!

    • @Sara: sorry it’s taken me so long to respond! Having the bassoon play the cello line should work just fine. The violin part here is really low (it’s really more of a viola part), so you may want to have the oboe play up an octave. There are some double-stop passages for the violin that the oboe cannot play, so you’ll just have to pick the notes you want bring out in that section. You could also have the oboe double the flute part, which might work better. Good luck with your performance!
